Primary Applications

There are many situations in which independent study provides the best or only effective means of teaching history.
  1. Where the student's learning level significantly differs from that of classmates
  2. Where physical circumstances prevent classroom participation
The periodical format and worksheet structure of Our Land Publications make this an ideal program for such instruction.

  • Gifted and Talented (GATE)
Whether a specific class for gifted and talented students is established or those students are included in the conventional elementary grade classroom, Our Land Publications are designed to provide them an organized curriculum which may be studied independently. Since lessons may be added or omitted without breaking continuity, students may work at their own pace. Since the programs are not "dumbed down," gifted students are challenged by content and do not become bored.

  • Special Education
Just as gifted students may work ahead of others at lower grade levels, learning challenged students may work behind other students at higher grade levels. The important essentials of each study are included, but presented in simpler vocabulary and sentence structure. The inviting periodical format also makes the study less intimidating. Once again, the individual needs of the student are better addressed.

  • English as a Second Language
ESL (and other specialized language situations) demand a compromise of vocabulary and sentence structure with depth of content. Our Land Publications provide the important lessons of history in simplified English. Whether preparing for naturalization or simply seeking a fuller knowledge of their state's or nation's history, students find the learning experience more appealing and interesting when using this friendly format.

  • Adult Education Classes
Where adult education classes in history are offered, whether for high school equivalency credit or as supplemental education, Our Land Publications are designed to provide students an organized curriculum which may be studied at an individualized pace. The programs are not "dumbed down" studies, but simplified presentations of history essentials well suited to adults, especially those who may be weak in reading skills.

  • Community Programs
Often adult education takes a less intimidating form in community, fraternal, or church sponsored classes and interest groups. Our Land Publications provide an appealing and enjoyable means of learning state and/or national history without creating a forced or rigid study structure.

  • Physically Disabled
When physical disability interferes with or prevents classroom study, Our Land Publications provide a natural alternative to textbooks. Using the individualized lesson sheets (newspapers), a structured study is easily maintained and the student responses incorporated in the lessons make assessment easier, even by telephone. The sense of ownership and personal attention facilitated by these studies enhance the student's sense of self-worth and achievement.

  • Juvenile Justice
Students in a Juvenile Justice program are commonly learning disadvantaged whether by aptitude or interest. Finding an appealing way to teach social studies can help them develop knowledge and interest where it may be most important in their social adjustment to life. The friendly yet effective periodical format and personalized writing style of Our Land Publications make them an ideal alternative to unwelcome textbooks.

  • Homeschooling
Our Land Publications have proven themselves highly effective in homeschooling especially where the homeschooler is an untrained educator and/or the student is a challenged learner. (See the homeschool link for further information.)

  • Other Circumstances
Students who are for any reason socially or physically incompatible in a classroom environment may be taught individually at their own pace using these publications.
