There are many situations in which independent study provides the best or only effective means of teaching history.

Whether a specific class for gifted and talented students is established or those students are included in the conventional elementary grade classroom, Our Land Publications are designed to provide them an organized curriculum which may be studied independently. Since lessons may be added or omitted without breaking continuity, students may work at their own pace. Since the programs are not "dumbed down," gifted students are challenged by content and do not become bored.
Just as gifted students may work ahead of others at lower grade levels, learning challenged students may work behind other students at higher grade levels. The important essentials of each study are included, but presented in simpler vocabulary and sentence structure. The inviting periodical format also makes the study less intimidating. Once again, the individual needs of the student are better addressed.
ESL (and other specialized language situations) demand a compromise of vocabulary and sentence structure with depth of content. Where adult education classes in history are offered, whether for high school equivalency credit or as supplemental education, Our Land Publications are designed to provide students an organized curriculum which may be studied at an individualized pace. When physical disability interferes with or prevents classroom study, Our Land Publications provide a natural alternative to textbooks. Using the individualized lesson sheets (newspapers), a structured study is easily maintained and the student responses incorporated in the lessons make assessment easier, even by telephone. The sense of ownership and personal attention facilitated by these studies enhance the student's sense of self-worth and achievement.
Students in a Juvenile Justice program are commonly learning disadvantaged whether by aptitude or interest.
